Our Grief Support Services

Ted and Pam Larsen, owners of Church and Chapel Funeral Homes, have experienced the loss of family members, relatives and friends. Ted and Pam know that holding a funeral or memorial service for your loved one is a positive first step in the grieving process. In the days, weeks and months following the service, people continue to need others to lean on for understanding, encouragement and guidance.

This Pandemic of Grief

by Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D.

"The coronavirus is not only causing a viral pandemic—it is giving rise to a pandemic of grief. As I write this, in mid-March, we as a global community are suffering so many losses that I hardly know where to begin.

Death and grief go hand-in-hand, of course. Thousands of people have already died of COVID-19 worldwide. Many more are dying right now. These are terrible losses for the loved ones of these precious individuals, and they will need our support and empathy in the months to come.

Yet what strikes me at this moment is that this aggressive new virus is threatening every single person on Earth with myriad losses of every kind. Name something you care about or that gives your life meaning. In all likelihood, this attachment is now negatively affected or threatened in some way by the coronavirus."

Reconciling your grief will not happen quickly. Remember, grief is a process, not an event. Be patient and tolerant with yourself and avoid people who are impatient and intolerant with you. Neither you nor those around you must forget that the death of someone loved changes your life forever.

Our Grief Support Services seek to acknowledge the power and significance of your family’s loss by extending opportunities of healing through:

  • support at the time of viewing, during the funeral services, and afterwards
  • ongoing periodic contact with family members during their time of loss, especially during the first year.
  • providing grief education materials.
  • offering a listing of grief support groups ans grief and support seminars or programs in your community
  • sharing a referral list of counselors specializing in grief
  • recognizing and providing practical tips in walking through significant moments within the first year of grief (i.e. holidays, anniversaries, etc.)
  • an online Journey of Grief Video Series with Doug Manning
  • downloadable grief support articles written by Dr. Alan Wolfelt through this web site
  • a register of recommended reading titles and authors of books that may serve as helpful grief support companions

"Every time we make the decision to love someone, we open ourselves to great suffering, because those we most love cause us not only great joy but also great pain. The greatest pain comes from leaving. When the child leaves home, when the husband or wife leaves for a long period of time or for good, when the beloved friend departs to another country or dies … the pain of the leaving can tear us apart.

Still, if we want to avoid the suffering of leaving, we will never experience the joy of loving. And love is stronger than fear, life stronger than death, hope stronger than despair. We have to trust that the risk of loving is always worth taking."
